About us:
Who are we?
The Wheelchair Football Association (WFA) was formed in 2005 to govern the sport of Powerchair Football in England. The Football Association recognises The WFA as the sports lead organisation, and they sanction our Laws.
As a charity (1161260), our mission is to ensure that Powerchair Football is accessible to the widest number of its target audience. We deliver & promote the sport of Powerchair Football to improve conditions of life and assist in their integration into the game of football and society as a whole.
What is Powerchair Football?
Powerchair Football is a unique sport that provides opportunities for people with a high level of physical impairment to access football. It is the only active team participation sport for people who use electric wheelchairs. The sport is fast-paced, dynamic and very enjoyable to watch. Due to its unique nature, Powerchair Football allows all ages, disabilities and genders to compete together on a level playing field.
Why Support Us?
- As a national organisation, we have a proven track record of development, beginning with just a handful of players to a membership of approximately 1000 people, including more than 400 registered players.
- We are a unique charity - the only organisation that supports vulnerable people and their families throughout England, from day 1 of their first introduction to powerchair football, through to the opportunity to represent England.
- Covid19 has had a significant impact on our ability to support our community and develop our game. Players and families have had to shield for the best part of a year and have had no access to our game. We want to bounce back as much as possible to help our community get back to playing and return their levels of enthusiasm & confidence.
Today
The WFA has more than 40 clubs and close to 400 registered players. We deliver a two-tiered National League competition, held centrally at Nottingham Trent University and a National Cup competition. This culminates at a finals weekend at St Georges Park, home of The FA England team.
We also support the delivery of 6 regional leagues and deliver an education programme on coaching, refereeing and classification.
At a local level, we support the development of new clubs, delivering festivals & events, loaning equipment and providing administrative support during a new club's first steps.
We provide a talent pathway alongside colleagues at The FA, enabling talented young players to reach their potential and represent England.
Aspirations
We know there is real scope for growth in all areas of our sport, and we want to provide further opportunities and access to powerchair football across England. As a small charity focusing mainly on the support of volunteers, we know there is the capacity to grow our game and reach even further throughout England, meaning more clubs, teams and players accessing our game. Your sponsorship, skills and expertise will help raise awareness of our game and inspire more people to get involved.
You can contribute to our wider goal of a provision in every county in England.
